Sevelamer works locally in the digestive tract by binding phosphate from food and reducing its absorption into the bloodstream. SAVELINER 400 is used as part of an overall phosphate-management plan that may include a prescribed renal diet and dialysis. Unlike calcium-based phosphate binders, sevelamer does not contribute additional calcium to the body. If you miss a dose, follow your doctor's instructions and do not take an extra dose without medical advice. Sevelamer can affect the absorption of some oral medicines.
