Medicine information

Uses & overview

Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It works by interfering with bacterial protein production, helping stop the growth and spread of susceptible bacteria. Tobramycin is available in different formulations, including Tobramycin Eye Drops, which may be prescribed for bacterial infections affecting the eyes. The specific formulation, strength, dosage, and treatment duration should be determined by a qualified healthcare professional according to the patient's condition.

How to use

Tobramycin Eye Drops should be used exactly as prescribed by your ophthalmologist or healthcare professional. The correct dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the bacterial eye infection and the specific product strength. Wash your hands: Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before using the eye drops to reduce the risk of contamination. Check the bottle: Verify the medicine name, strength, expiry date, and product instructions before application. Shake if required: If your Tobramycin product is a suspension, gently shake the bottle according to the manufacturer's instructions before each use. Prepare your eye: Tilt your head backward and look upward. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Apply the prescribed dose: Hold the bottle above the eye and place the recommended number of drops into the affected eye. Avoid contamination: Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, eyelashes, eyelids, fingers, or any other surface. Close your eye gently: Close your eye for a short period after applying the drop. Avoid rubbing or squeezing your eye. Follow the prescribed schedule: Use Tobramycin at the recommended times and complete the prescribed course unless your doctor advises otherwise. Other eye medicines: If you use other eye drops or ointments, ask your healthcare professional about the appropriate interval between applications. Missed dose: Apply the missed dose when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not use extra drops to compensate.

Important guidance

Safety advice

Check with your doctor
AlcoholConsult your doctor

There is no well-established direct interaction between alcohol and Tobramycin Eye Drops. Because ophthalmic administration generally results in limited systemic exposure, alcohol is not usually a specific concern. However, avoid excessive alcohol and follow your healthcare professional’s advice.

PregnancyConsult your doctor

If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or think you may be pregnant, consult your ophthalmologist before using Tobramycin Eye Drops. Your doctor will consider the potential benefits and risks and determine whether Tobramycin is appropriate for your condition during pregnancy.

BreastfeedingConsult your doctor

If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Tobramycin Eye Drops. Although systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration is generally limited, your healthcare professional can assess your individual circumstances and advise whether the medicine is suitable while breastfeeding.

DrivingConsult your doctor

Tobramycin Eye Drops may temporarily cause blurred vision, irritation, or discomfort immediately after application. Avoid driving, cycling, or operating machinery until your vision becomes clear and you are confident that you can perform these activities safely.

KidneyConsult your doctor

Inform your healthcare professional if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function before using Tobramycin. Although eye drops generally produce limited systemic exposure, Tobramycin can affect the kidneys when significant systemic absorption occurs, particularly with prolonged or intensive treatment.

LiverConsult your doctor

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or impaired liver function before using Tobramycin. Ophthalmic Tobramycin generally has limited systemic absorption, but your healthcare professional should consider your complete medical history and other medicines before recommending treatment.
