Medicine information

Uses & overview

Tropicamide is a prescription ophthalmic medicine primarily used to temporarily dilate the pupil and relax the muscles responsible for focusing the eye. It is commonly used by ophthalmologists and optometrists during comprehensive eye examinations and certain diagnostic procedures, allowing better visualization of the retina and other internal structures of the eye. Tropicamide generally produces temporary effects, with the duration depending on the concentration and individual response.

How to use

Tropicamide eye drops should be used only as directed by an ophthalmologist or other qualified healthcare professional. It is commonly administered before an eye examination to temporarily dilate the pupil and help the doctor examine the inside of the eye. Wash your hands: Clean and dry your hands thoroughly before handling the eye-drop bottle. Check the medicine: Confirm the medicine name, strength, and expiry date. Do not use the product if the packaging or bottle is damaged. Prepare the eye: Tilt your head backward or lie down comfortably and gently pull the lower eyelid downward to create a small pocket. Apply the drops: Hold the bottle close to the eye without allowing the dropper tip to touch the eye, eyelashes, eyelids, or surrounding skin. Instill the number of drops recommended by your doctor. Close the eye: Gently close your eye after application. Avoid rubbing or squeezing your eyelids. Prevent contamination: Replace the cap securely after use and keep the dropper tip clean. Do not share the bottle with another person. Follow medical instructions: Use Tropicamide according to the timing and dosage specified for your eye examination or diagnostic procedure.

Important guidance

Safety advice

Check with your doctor
AlcoholConsult your doctor

There is no well-established direct interaction between alcohol and Tropicamide eye drops. However, alcohol may increase dizziness or other effects in some people. Avoid excessive alcohol around the time of treatment and follow your ophthalmologist’s recommendations.

PregnancyConsult your doctor

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suspect pregnancy, inform your doctor before using Tropicamide. Your healthcare professional can evaluate your individual circumstances and determine whether the expected benefits of using Tropicamide for an eye examination outweigh potential risks.

BreastfeedingConsult your doctor

If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor or ophthalmologist before receiving Tropicamide eye drops. Although the medicine is applied to the eye, some systemic absorption can occur. Your healthcare professional can provide appropriate advice based on your individual situation.

DrivingConsult your doctor

Tropicamide temporarily dilates the pupils and may cause blurred vision, difficulty focusing, and increased sensitivity to light. Do not drive, cycle, or operate machinery until your vision has returned to normal and you can perform these activities safely.

KidneyConsult your doctor

If you have kidney disease or impaired kidney function, inform your doctor before using Tropicamide. Because it is generally used as a short-term ophthalmic preparation, significant systemic exposure is limited, but your healthcare professional should consider your complete medical history.

LiverConsult your doctor

Inform your doctor if you have liver disease or impaired liver function before using Tropicamide. Since it is administered as an ophthalmic preparation and typically used for diagnostic purposes, your doctor can determine whether any additional precautions are necessary for your individual circumstances.
