Medicine information

Uses & overview

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic prescribed to treat selected bacterial infections. It works by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis, preventing susceptible bacteria from growing and multiplying. Depending on the infection and local treatment guidelines, doctors may prescribe Clarithromycin for certain respiratory tract infections, throat infections, sinus infections, skin infections, and soft tissue infections. Clarithromycin may also be used with other medicines to treat Helicobacter pylori infection, which is associated with peptic ulcers. The exact treatment regimen depends on the diagnosis, local antibiotic resistance patterns, and the patient's medical history.

How to use

Follow the prescribed dosage: Take Clarithromycin in the exact amount and at the intervals recommended by your healthcare professional. Do not change the dose yourself. Check food instructions: Immediate-release tablets can generally be taken with or without food, while extended-release formulations may have specific meal-related instructions. Follow the leaflet for your particular product. Take doses consistently: Try to take each dose at the recommended time to maintain a regular treatment schedule. Swallow tablets as directed: Do not crush or chew extended-release tablets. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure whether your formulation can be split or altered. Complete the prescribed course: Continue treatment for the recommended duration, even if symptoms improve earlier, unless your doctor tells you to stop. Handle missed doses carefully: Take a missed dose when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double the next dose. Check medicine interactions: Inform your doctor about prescription medicines, supplements, and herbal products, especially medicines affecting heart rhythm or cholesterol levels. Monitor side effects: Contact your doctor if you experience severe diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin, or dark urine. Seek urgent medical attention for fainting, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or a severe allergic reaction.
