Medicine information

Uses & overview

Thalidomide is a prescription medicine with immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic properties. It is used for selected serious conditions, particularly multiple myeloma in combination with other medicines and certain complications of leprosy, such as erythema nodosum leprosum, where approved. Its specific indications depend on the patient's diagnosis, product authorization, and local treatment guidelines. Thalidomide works by influencing immune system activity and biological processes involved in inflammation and the growth of certain cancer cells. In multiple myeloma, it may be included in a specialist-directed combination treatment plan. For leprosy-related complications, it may help control inflammatory symptoms under strict medical supervision.

How to use

Follow the specialist's prescription: Take only the prescribed dose. Do not increase, reduce, or stop treatment without consulting your doctor. Follow the prescribed schedule: Thalidomide is commonly taken by mouth, often at bedtime because it can cause drowsiness. Follow the instructions specific to your treatment regimen. Swallow capsules whole: Take capsules with water. Do not open, crush, chew, or break them. Avoid contact with damaged capsules or their contents. Handle the medicine safely: Keep capsules in their original packaging and out of children's reach. Wash your hands after handling them and follow your pharmacist's instructions for safe disposal. Follow pregnancy-prevention requirements: Thalidomide must not be used during pregnancy. Patients who could become pregnant must follow required pregnancy tests and contraception precautions. Men must follow the prescribed condom and reproductive-fluid precautions. Manage missed doses carefully: Follow the package leaflet or contact your treatment team for instructions. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Attend monitoring appointments: Your doctor may arrange blood tests and monitor for nerve damage, blood clots, and other adverse effects. Report symptoms promptly: Seek medical advice for new numbness, tingling, weakness, leg swelling, chest pain, or breathing difficulties. Chest pain or sudden breathing difficulties require emergency assessment. Discuss other medicines: Tell your doctor about sedatives, blood thinners, hormonal contraceptives, and all supplements because interactions or additional risks may occur.
