Warfarin 1 mg

Warfarin Sodium IP 1 mg is a prescription anticoagulant medicine used to help prevent and treat harmful blood clots in selected medical conditions. It works by reducing the production of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the liver, helping prevent clots from growing or forming. Medicine information

Uses & overview

Warfarin Sodium IP 1 mg is an oral anticoagulant medicine used under medical supervision to prevent and treat blood clots. It belongs to a class of medicines known as vitamin K antagonists. Warfarin reduces the liver's production of certain clotting factors, helping slow the blood-clotting process and reduce the risk of harmful clots forming or growing. Doctors may prescribe warfarin for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and prevention of blood clots in selected patients with atrial fibrillation or mechanical heart valves. The exact indication and treatment duration depend on the patient's condition and medical history. Warfarin does not dissolve existing clots immediately; it helps prevent further clotting while the body gradually processes existing clots.

How to use

Follow your prescribed dose: Take only the dose specified by your healthcare professional. The 1 mg tablet strength does not mean that everyone should take one tablet daily. Take it at a consistent time: Warfarin is commonly taken once daily, often in the evening. Swallow the tablet with water and follow your prescribed schedule. Attend regular INR tests: Your doctor will monitor your INR to check how quickly your blood clots. Your dose may be adjusted according to the results. Handle missed doses carefully: If you forget a dose, follow your anticoagulation clinic's instructions. Do not double the next dose. Contact your healthcare professional if you are unsure what to do. Maintain a consistent diet: Foods rich in vitamin K, including spinach, broccoli, and other green leafy vegetables, can affect warfarin. You generally do not need to avoid these foods, but keep your intake consistent. Check before taking other medicines: Antibiotics, aspirin, ibuprofen, herbal products, and supplements can interact with warfarin. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting or stopping any medicine. Reduce your risk of injury: Use a soft toothbrush and take care when shaving or handling sharp objects because bleeding may be harder to stop. Recognize warning signs: Seek urgent medical attention for uncontrolled bleeding, blood in urine, black stools, vomiting blood, or a severe headache following a head injury.

Important guidance

Safety advice

Check with your doctor
AlcoholConsult your doctor

Alcohol can alter warfarin's effects and increase the risk of bleeding. Avoid binge drinking, and consult your doctor about alcohol consumption, especially if you have liver disease.

PregnancyConsult your doctor

Warfarin can harm an unborn baby and cause birth defects or fetal bleeding. Contact your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or become pregnant during treatment. Do not change treatment independently

BreastfeedingConsult your doctor

Warfarin is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding when medically indicated. Consult your doctor before use and seek advice about monitoring your baby for unusual bruising or bleeding.

DrivingConsult your doctor

Warfarin does not usually directly impair driving, but bleeding complications or an injury can be serious. Avoid driving if you feel unwell, experience concerning symptoms, or have been advised against it by your doctor.

KidneyConsult your doctor

Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease or receive dialysis. Kidney impairment may increase bleeding risk and complicate treatment, so your INR and overall condition may require closer monitoring.

LiverConsult your doctor

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, hepatitis, or cirrhosis. Liver problems can alter clotting factor production and warfarin response, increasing bleeding risk and potentially requiring closer INR monitoring.
